Good Boards/Bad Boards: What Makes Them So and Why It Matters

Buff Kavelman, President of Kavelman Group Philanthropic Advisors, recently led a Lunch and Learn discussion on best practices in nonprofit and foundation governance with Isabel Miranda, Founder of Law Offices of Isabel Miranda, LLC. The program was sponsored by the New York Philanthropic Advisors Network (NYPAN).

Ms. Kavelman and Ms. Miranda spoke on such topics as legal requirements for nonprofit and foundation boards; how failing to meet these legal requirements can place an organization at risk; successful board development and recruitment strategies; the underpinnings of good governance and strong boards; and how individuals can get the most out of board service.

Brief case studies were shared to demonstrate how dysfunctional boards can be turned around, and how well-functioning boards can help philanthropic organizations thrive even in uncertain economic times.
