In the 2010s, an organization with an outstanding legacy of more than a century of contributions realized it needed to adapt to maintain its impact in a changing environment.

A family foundation based in Louisville, KY retained The Kavelman Group (TKG) to advise them on how the foundation could grow to its next level by clarifying its mission; developing a more focused and strategic grantmaking program; and solidifying its staffing, governance and board practices.

The following three case studies are based on actual client projects, however names, places and other identifying details have been changed to protect our clients’ privacy.

In the early 1990s, The Cooper-Hewitt Museum’s director and Board envisioned the idea for an awards program to celebrate the best in American design and to increase national awareness of design by educating the public and promoting excellence, innovation, and lasting achievement. By 1997, the Museum had received sponsorship commitments from major corporations, including Ford and Xerox, to launch The National Design Awards; however, the Museum was in danger of losing these sponsorships because it lacked leadership and staff capacity to move the initiative forward.

The Foundation for Art and Preservation in Embassies (FAPE) is the leading non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the image of the United States abroad through the installation of permanent works of American art in embassies around the world. By partnering with American artists, FAPE gifts encourage cross-cultural understanding within the diplomatic community and the international public. Founded as a public-private, non-partisan partnership in 1986, FAPE works with the U.S. Department of State to contribute fine art to U.S. embassies. As of 2010, FAPE’s legacy includes more than $56 million in donations of funds and 186 artworks in 140 countries.

The Kavelman Group was approached by Mohonk Preserve to create and facilitate a Board retreat and training sessions at an important new juncture in its growth as an organization. The Preserve protects and manages over 8,000 acres in the majestic Shawangunk Mountains. As New York’s largest nonprofit nature preserve, they welcome over 165,000 visitors each year.

Founded in 1960-61 under the leadership of Governor John D. Rockefeller, the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) is the oldest and largest state arts agency in the country. Throughout its history, it has been committed to excellence in every art form and has sought to reach into every community and touch every citizen of the state. As of 2010 it provided approximately $36 million through 2,500 grants.
